1. the story of Pandora's box1. Compare and contrast this text or media with related text/media. Be specific-what text or media? What are the similarities and dissimilarities, etc.

Answer:

Pandora's Box vs. The Second Creation Story

Pandora's Box was based off of the second creation story when written. Therefore, a great amount of similarities exist between the two stories. Both stories involve human curiosity overcoming good judgment. Both stories teach us to understand possible consequences before acting.

Both stories include a description of how evil came into the world; the origin of evil has been a question which has been pondered since the beginning of man. At times, people feel helpless witnessing the treacheries of this world. Both of these stories seek to answer this question.

Each story involves trickery; in Pandora's Box, Zeus tricks Epimethius/Pandora into falling in love/opening the box of evil, while in the second creation story, the serpent tricks the first woman into eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. From this idea, it is seen that both Pandora and the first woman allowed curiosity to overcome them.

While the myth of Pandora's Box was based off of the Second Creation Story, the two still have major differences. The most prominent difference is the fact that the Greek myth has more than one god; it has three involved. The woman in the myth does not trick man into joining her in doing the wrong thing, instead she seeks forgiveness from the man. Also, instead of causing only evil to escape into the world, Pandora also releases Hope, something good. The item to cause evil to be present in the world is a piece of fruit in the bible story, while in the myth it is a jar.

The characters in the two stories have their differences as well. Pandora was sent by Zeus to be a way to trick and exact revenge on Epimethius and Prometheus. Eve was created by God to be a companion for Adam, as a sort of gift.

The myths, being written 900 years or so after the stories in Genesis, have many parallels with the Bible. This shows how stories and myths can travel from civilization to civilization, how they change in the process, and how they apply to modern society.
