11. After reading Rizal’s two novels, how will you appraise Rizal as a novelist?

Jose Rizal is a man of many hats, and as a novelist, he is undeniably one of the Philippines’ most prolific writers.

So passionate is Rizal’s fight for the country and the well-being of his fellowmen that he was able to produce such masterpieces as Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. If not for his execution, he probably finished writing his third novel Makamisa.

His books highlighted the plight of the Filipinos – or Indios, as locals were called during the Spanish colonial era – and he did not mince his words when castigating abusive government officials and priests of the Catholic Church.

Aside from his novels, Rizal also produced many plays, children’s stories, poems, and essays that touched on various topics about society and its ills. Rizal was considered a child prodigy, and it shows in his set of works.

I appreciate Rizal’s use of symbolism in his novels. One such symbolism is Kapitan Tiago’s house which represents the Philippines. Maria Clara also symbolizes the nation: abused and neglected but later on was ready to fight for her rights.

Rizal’s symbolisms, metaphors, and allegories are subtle yet enough to irk the powers that be during his time. No wonder Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo were banned by Spanish authorities.

Rizal is indeed the pride of the Malay race and remains a guiding light not just for Filipinos but Asians.

Answer:

Jose Rizal read and admired the novel "The Count of Monte-Cristo" by French author Alexander Dumas. Quite often people who read Rizal and this work of Dumas, relay the character of Edmond Dantes with that of Simoun (El Filibusterismo). The plot of revenge and the lonely figure of an avenging hero is too similar to be ignored. The difference came in the ending of the two novels. While Edmond Dantes found fulfillment in his life, Rizal gave a tragic end for Simoun (Ibarra).
