Typhoon Haiyan Essay

Imagine wind speeds of 315 km/h, hurricane force winds extending 50 miles from the center, a storm killing more than 6,000 people and destroying more than 1 million homes; those living in the philippines on November 8th 2013 didn’t have to imagine as the tropical storm touched down. Typhoon haiyan was an extremely powerful tropical storm, and one of the strongest tropical storms ever recorded, it was also the most powerful storm to ever hit the philippines. The devastation was immense, and the cost of rebuilding was more than any nation should have to encounter, which brought in many volunteer groups and a government plan. Countries along the fault line are in constant fear and danger of natural disasters so it is important to predict and prepare for these events.

The destruction typhoon haiyan caused was immense. A category 5 super typhoon, It developed in the west-northern part of the north pacific ocean by thunderstorms converting moisture into heat, causing more air to flow to the centre of the storm causing evaporation, all the heat and air flow towards the eye thus creating a typhoon. It was created in November 2, 2013, it hit the Philippines in November 8th 2013, and dissipated on November 11th 2013. The diameter of the storm was about 300 miles. The wind speed was estimated to have reached an average of 310 km/h (195mp/h).

The typhoon devastatingly affected the Philippines. The affected areas were Philippines, Micronesia, & Vietnam. The damage cost of typhoon haiyan was 2.86 Billion USD, and it killed more than 6,000 people, 1,800 missing, and more than 27,000 injured. The storm forced 3.9 million people out of their homes and affected 1.47 million families. There are volunteer groups, like the Hong Kong red cross, which has launched post disaster recovery and reconstruction programmes in the affected areas. The crossroads foundation is also helping, by sending containers filled with goods to help rebuilding efforts in the affected areas. The Philippines government claims its “doing well” in aiding survivors, even though they fail to get supplies to the 2.5 million people who are in desperate need of food, though other governments are helping, like the U.S. government, and the U.N.

Typhoons can be predicted. Though the predictions are not exact, scientists can make a fairly accurate prediction of when typhoons will come. Meteorologists can use tools from satellite images to Doppler radar to predict a typhoon up to a week in advance. Though the tools have been improving through the past years, these tools aren’t exactly accurate, so meteorologists are basically estimating when a typhoon will happen. But in the little time you have left, you can prepare for it.
